Since the establishment of the ECEC Chinese School in June 2017, all teachers, parents and management team members have been working together and the school has developed steadily. As the 2022-2023 school year approaches, the school starts new student enrolment.

The Edinburgh Chinese Language Centre upholds its love of traditional Chinese culture through various ways. Since 2018, it has had cucurbit playing classes. Under the guidance of professional teachers, students start off as newbies to the instrument but through two years of hard work they will become very skilled in playing the instrument.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the way ECEC’s recitation competition ran this year was adapted. This year each of the contestants submitted a recording of themselves reciting their chosen pieces. Though this is different to previous years, this certainly did not affect the enthusiasm of the participants who all put in strenuous amounts of preparation anyway!

We must thank the Chinese Embassy in the UK and the Chinese Consulate General in Edinburgh who allowed us to receive and give such items. We must also thank the staff of ECEC for the quick and efficient distribution of the supplies which helped prevent the spread of the virus in our communities. Thanks to a variety of people, we have successfully distributed the supplies. Hopefully the coronavirus will end soon and that everyone will stay safe, so we can return to the classrooms of ECEC soon.

After the coronavirus started quickly spreading in the UK, the ECEC swiftly changed to online classes and with the help of teachers and parents, the use of the online platform became efficient and soon classes were taught online. Although everyone was separated by a screen, the students were still quickly drawn into the classes with enthusiasm and the lessons were carried out lively and efficiently. Online materials were further introduced to increase the teaching effectiveness and allow the students to get better at Mandarin.

On the 22nd of February to the 29th, students and teachers alike began making their way back to the classroom after a holiday. The parents, teachers and students decided to raise money to help the doctors and nurses in China. The money was donated on the basis that students would donate whatever they could, and that parents and teachers donated as much as their kindness could give. Adding all the money up, the amount donated was £690 and ¥860. The money was changed to Yuan and was sent to China to help the nurses and doctors fighting on the frontline.

From August 8th to 17th, the Asian Association of Culture, Commerce and Education in Europe (AACCEE) organized the “Belt and Road” Chinese Culture and Art Shows at the 2018 Edinburgh International Festival. During the festival, the dance team from our school was invited to perform at the show on August 10th and 12th. They presented the audience two pieces of performance: “ONE DAY in ECEC” and “Flowering Season”. They are choreographed by the dance teacher of our school and presented on stage for the first time.

Our newly opened Happy Chinese Class (for 5+ years old) is for non-native speakers who are interested in Chinese language and culture. Our philosophy is to create fun and engaging learning environment. Our goal is to enable children to have preliminary skills to recognize, read and communicate in Chinese, to cultivate children’s interest in Chinese and Chinese culture, and to lay a good foundation for their further learning.
